Oxendean Farm, Jevington
27th January

Hounds met at Oxendean Farm, Jevington by kind invitation of Stephen and Fizz Carr Following a day of high winds and rain the wind had reduced but was still strong and there was mist and drizzle. Adrian and our host, Steve Carr and his two children, Charlotte (6) and Joey (10), were the quarry for the first line.

The hounds struggled on the exposed stubble fields in the wind as they climbed up towards Friston Forest but streamed away on entering the woods. They bye passed the dew pond and turning back towards the edge of the wood lost the line. After extensive casting they picked it up, hunting all through the beech trees round Middle Brow to catch the quarry below the mound.

Chris and Robbie were our next quarry and had been enlarged three quarters of an hour before hounds were laid on. Hounds hunted towards Beggar's Croft and hunting on through the beech trees towards New Barn, they crossed over the tracks at Friston Bottom and back again past the waterworks. Turning below Friston Hill they hunted through the trees up the side of the gallops to catch the quarry at the top dew pond with the field unable to keep in touch. For the next line, Adrian had been enlarged half an hour before. The hounds were laid on behind the dew pond, and swung down Snap Hill to Charleston Bottom and made a large loop around the top end of the forest where he was caught. The hounds were held for ten minutes while he ran through the trees to the dew pond at Charleston Bottom, which they hunted in great style.

Chris and Robbie had meanwhile been enlarged behind the dew pond half an hour earlier. Hounds hunted up Snap Hill but they missed a large loop of forest hunting and found the quarry at the top dew pond. As both horses and hounds had had enough, home was blown.

It was an extremely hard day for the hounds who are still only about 75% fit and this was the young entries first hunt in woodland. Some coped well but others were tailed off. Thanks to the support team all hounds were on at the end of the day.
